ACCU Scheme · carbon project register

Australia's carbon projects,
all of them.

Every active carbon credit project in Australia — farmers rebuilding soil, landowners protecting forests, operators capturing landfill gas. Each one earns Australian Carbon Credit Units by removing or avoiding CO₂. Sourced from the Clean Energy Regulator's public project register, updated monthly.

Why QLD leads
Queensland has the most active carbon projects of any state — driven by its savanna burning programs across the Gulf Country and Cape York, alongside strong soil carbon and vegetation uptake in western Queensland.
One Australian Carbon Credit Unit equals one tonne of CO₂ equivalent avoided or removed from the atmosphere. Projects earn ACCUs by demonstrating real, measurable carbon outcomes — verified by the Clean Energy Regulator. Companies buy ACCUs to offset their own emissions, or the government purchases them through the Emissions Reduction Fund.
🌱
Soil carbon · low confidence tier
Soil carbon farming
Farmers change grazing patterns, add organic material, or reduce tillage to rebuild carbon in depleted soils. Carbon is measured by soil sampling. The most rapidly growing method in Australia — 943 active projects.
🌲
Plantation forestry · medium confidence
Plantation forestry
New forests planted on previously cleared land, sequestering carbon as trees grow. Long crediting periods — often 25 years. Subject to permanence obligations requiring the forest to remain.
🌿
Vegetation HIR · low confidence tier
Regenerating native forest
Landowners allow previously cleared or degraded native vegetation to regrow by controlling grazing and other threats. Human-induced regeneration — the land does the work, the farmer protects it.
🗑️
Landfill gas · high confidence
Landfill gas capture
Methane from decomposing waste is captured and either flared or converted to electricity. Methane is 28× more potent than CO₂ as a greenhouse gas — capturing it delivers large, measurable emissions reductions.
🔥
Savanna burning · medium confidence
Savanna fire management
Traditional owners and land managers conduct early dry season burns across northern Australia, preventing the larger, hotter late-season fires that release far more greenhouse gases. Culturally significant and ecologically vital.
🛡️
Avoided clearing · high confidence
Avoided land clearing
Landowners commit to not clearing native vegetation they were legally entitled to clear. The carbon stored in that standing vegetation earns ACCUs. High confidence because the baseline — what would have happened — is well documented.
Energy efficiency · high confidence
Energy efficiency
Industrial facilities and commercial buildings reduce electricity or fuel consumption through equipment upgrades. Emissions reductions are calculated against a pre-project baseline using metered energy data.
🚛
Transport · medium confidence
Cleaner transport
Fleet operators switch to lower-emission fuels or vehicles — compressed natural gas trucks, electric vehicles, or biodiesel. Emissions avoided versus a fossil fuel baseline earn ACCUs.
